so Linux offers decent drivers but quite possibly Microsoft and/or 
Asus would not.

the person who got Mint on board said there only hitch was the using 
the functional keys for dimming or brightening the screen, which could 
be gotten around with xbacklight.

I'd be using a legit copy of Windows 7. got a cheap license.
