The sftp thing is a known problem, and is being worked on, but other things
have priority right now. You may be able to band-aid it for the present by
downgrading your openssh install or using the fish:// protocol rather than
sftp. For details, check the archive for the dev mailing list--there's a thread
there from a few days ago, "sftp-kio status? sftp:// currently gives "Error
encountered talking to ssh"" that covers this.
