That makes more sense now; language support was only repaired in Trinity
3.5.12, which is available for the following distributions and codenames:
Ubuntu Maverick (10.10)
Debian Lenny (5.0.6)
Debian Squeeze
Slackware 12.2

All older versions (for example Juanty, Karmic, and Lucid) most likely
have broken language support, with the symptoms that you have described.
