I have installed both comixcursors (virtual package), 
comixcursors-righthanded-opaque, big-cursor and dmz-cursor-theme.  At that 
point I saw no point in installing any more packages with cursor themes.  
comixcursors installs only small cursors in the combination 8 and 14 (cf my 
earlier correspondence on this list with Gene), so as I say I am waiting for 
Stretch.  Meanwhile I was trying to get one of the others going.  Since I 
have located big-cursor it seemed the most likely to succeed.  I know that 
dmz is there - it is in the control center list but will not "work" - but I 
haven't narrowed its location down yet.

I'll try Nik's suggestion.
