Hi Gene,

It is better to have "restore volumes on login" checked.  Without
it you may find that when you make a small adjustment in volume
your sound level jumps or disappears.

However for kmix to work properly it has to be configured to match
your system as Kate mentioned.

That's why disabling "restore volumes on login" is a possible
kludge rather than a fix.
