I used 'adduser' and opened the session; still problem with VLC.

so, yeah, something in the basic system.

I suspect I have to fool around with gtk2 somewhere. I dread that but 
may dig in tonight.

the other applications I use seem ok. Pan has changed its interface so 
that the menu icons are more 'pastel', which I dislike, but I 
generally ignore them anyway.
