I've seen this before. Sometimes it just helps to plug out the unit out and do 
the following.

If you can, power it down, then connect it, power it back up.
If it works, it's like the unit. If it doesn't, then it's software.

Another thing  you can try is to wait for a few mins, until the drive spins 
up, plug it out, wait 10s plug in again.

It could be the drive is really slow to spin up.
