I do not know what to say ... qt5ct fails because an environment variable QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME was not set ... wtf??? Ok, I set 
	
	export QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR=0
	export QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME="qt5ct"

and now lyx works as expected. If you wonder, the firse line is for VLC: without it, VLC has buttons as big as a football. That GUI mess is growing like cancer :-(
