OK, sorry I didn't see that bug originally.  I put a couple of suggestions
on the bug report.

There are some fixes in SVN for GTK related problems; this may be fixed in
the binaries shortly.

Wow, I never heard of a desktop (Gnome in this case) behaving that badly
towards another before!  KDE4 does try to launch Plasma if it isn't forced
into submission via dpkg-redirects, but I have no idea why Gnome thinks it
has the right to seize full desktop control. :-/
