My problem was i did not have the open/save dialogs> 'use LO dialogs' check box. 


I purged LO and re-installed, v 3.3.4. Now I have  the 'Use LO Dialogs' check box.  
I get a 'file open dialog' with LO dialogs is selected and none with it 
un-selected.

Not very  enlightening, but it worked.

There does seem to be an issue with LO and the  the 'open/save dialogs' feature  
being present.  Google suggests it happens elsewhere.
