I don't mean this disrespectfully but just to better apprise you
of your situation.

What you're doing is kind of like brain surgery and if you're
doing brain surgery and you're asking a diabetics mailing list
whether it's OK to remove this lumpy bit then you probably
shouldn't be doing brain surgery.

I have a master's in computer science and a lifetime of experience
and if I have to recover a hard drive in that kind of state I do a
lot of reading and studying.  Sometimes I have to read the source
code of a tool to see what it is really doing.  If I have to ask a
question I ask subject matter experts, not users of this magnificent
desktop environment.  And with all that I don't always succeed.
