In a completely diferent sound master volume thingy (SMVT, that's oh so 
technical!), I had to start each of the programs while the SMVT was running 
so I could set defaults per program.  e.g. I couldn't see Firefox unless it 
was started after the SMVT was already running.

Worth a try?
