A very big thank you to all of you, for the level of help I have received.  I 
am working my way through the suggestions.  

Since I have often done similar installs before without a hitch, and everyone 
else still can, I think that the problem must be PEBKAC or hardware. :-(  
Hardware woudl also probably be PEBKAC because I am building this machine.
