Thanks, Julius.  That is a very generous offer.  

I have started looking at the man entry for xrandr, and have decided that I 
shall perhaps understand better after some sleep.  I need to look up the 
theory behind monitors, I think!!  Once I get to look at words like gamma, 
when it doesn't mean the third letter of the Greek alphabet, at this time of 
night my eyes glaze over .....

Examples would be wonderful. :-)
