I had a similar problem at some point and the cause was that the icon size of some icons were set to zero.

Try this:
In TDE control center, in the appearance, icon section, try to change the size of every kinds of icons. You can even select back the same size as it was in the list. Then, click on apply and look back at your kicker menu. It might require a logout/login to work.

I discovered that sometimes, not always, some visual settings are not saved as a part of a theme in kthememanager. Also, some settings are not restored as they should every time someone change of theme. Timothy, if you want to see well this behaviour, it will be on the next release of my livecd.
