Debian 6, Squeeze.  Perhaps I should upgrade to Wheezy (Debian 7) pdq. and see 
if that helps.  (I was waiting for TDE to be ready for Wheezy, and have been 
a bit busy recently.)

Lucky you.  You, I think are using an rpm distro - OpenSuse?
