Herewith.  The no-date screenshot was taken as soon as I logged in and 
got the desktop.  I then fiddled* and brought the date back as shown 
in with-date.png.

*fiddled = open up configure clock.  Change the font for the date (to 
anything other than the one it is set to).  Click "OK" and then 
click "apply".  Rinse and repeat, this time re-choosing the original 
font, i.e. the one I want.
