I had something very similar on my desktop PC
running Debian-6.0.7 
To be candid I messed up something myself...
But discovered, that unplugging wireless
keyboard and mouse solves problem temporarily.
It looks that _hotplug _facility_ is not working...
You're lucky having console access, Hi!
