thanks very much, greg. as it happens, and i didn't realize this until i 
experimented a little more after sending note, the 
right-click-on-desktop "Configure desktop" menu allows for separate 
configuration also, down to running a separate program -- xplanet, 
kworldclock, say -- on each desktop. which i tried for a minute or two, 
then decided to have my moon desktop on the lower monitor and plain black 
on the top monitor. subject to change.

i'm really liking this.
