Just got back to this machine.  The first time it booted the icon was
normal, but after I rebooted it went back to the dot.  Rebooted several more
times, no change.

The trick with the Squeeze package was on a different machine, but thanks
for the suggestion.

Now I notice that TDEPowersave thinks there are 2 batteries (there's only
one), and it doesn't notice when I unplug the power and it's running on the
battery.

This is someone else's machine, so maybe I'll roll it back to 3.5.13.2 for
the moment, as it won't be here for me to debug when necessary.
