No !  I am not from the USA, although I've been there several times.

Yes I agree that most of the world is metric, though paper sizes have 
been standardised for a good number of years.  The USA does seem to 
have some odd sizes compared to Europe and 17x11 inches is not one that 
I am familiar with,  though turning the page through 90 degrees would 
correspond to the descriptions I gave.

I think I will keep you guessing a little longer.  :-) :-) :-)
