from outside the chrrot try : cat /mountproc.sh mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc mount --rbind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev mount --rbind /run /mnt/gentoo/run then from inside the chroot try : cat /postchroot.sh env-update source /etc/profile export PS1="(chroot) $PS1" grep -v rootfs /proc/mounts > /etc/mtab should fix your problem .
