Quote marks help--entering "kde3" -"kde4" into Google gets me correct search
results at the moment.

Clicking the "Verbatim" link in the left sidebar turns off a lot of Google's attempts
to (wrongly) reinterpret your search results.

Or switch to duckduckgo.com , which interprets searches the way a technically 
adept person would expect.  These days I tend to go there first, rather than
to Google.
