Thanks for all the replies.  Looks like my system works well now.
Before this had trouble with other live CDs: Jessie Debian installed
okay but seemed unable to get a wifi connection.
tde-ubuntu-14.04-desktop-latest-amd64 and lubuntu-14.10-desktop-amd64
were unable to complete the installation.

Finally had success with linuxmint-17.1-mate-64bit, added the Trinity
repos and installed my favorite TDE apps.  Later will try to setup the
display manager.
