It was gnome-settings-daemon I'd  put a link to in the AutoStart folder.
After moving my mouse to a single pixel it reported the battery status 
in black as a tool tip, so I guess it's some kind of system status 
applet, horribly shrunk down to near-zero size.

One time there was a little blue '*' to the right of the orange one.
