In the Debian list you say that you have installed pavucontrol and it doesn't 
work.  It wouldn't if pulseaudio is not installed. (PulseAudioVolUme = pavu)  
As I suggested there, have you tested your sound hardware?  (I suggested a 
live CD to test.)
