Thanks for the reply.  PCManFM, aka Caja (on my Mint base system),
*does* work, for both read and write.  Both Konqueror and Dolphin
don't.  So far mc doesn't either, but perhaps it can be set to see the
camera as an external file system.  Gphoto2 can see and query the
camera; maybe I'll play with it.
For now I can use PCManFM.
