A little of googling reveals that -s means "use Sun escape sequences instead of VT100" which in turns causes the error message to appear. The problem is at least 8 years old since I can find the same question dated back to 2007. Trying 'resize -s 25 80' followed by Ctrl+C seems to do the job, at least visually.
