I've now discovered that all three of my machines behave in exactly 
the same way.  One Intel and two AMD processors.  The AMD CPU are a 
64 bit dual core and the other is a 64 Bit quad core, both running 
Radion video cards, though the latter is built in to the CPU.

Isn't the Noveu driver the default one ? on Alexandre's PCLinuxOS.

I recall that I had this problem with another distribution.  In the 
end I just nuked it and went back to Alexandre's previous release !
