I commented out the trinity entries in the sources.list, updated without a
problem, and installed LXDE.

Having not had teh problem from within LXDE the other day, I thought I might
as well see what happened if I uncommented the trinity repositories and
updated. No problems. So I attemted to install trinity from within LXDE,
and it is at this moment happily installing.

So by going round the houses, I got to where I wanted to be. But what was
going on????
