I think it is, that is is personal to $USER and not global.  And is a separate 
file, or anyhow a separate part of a file - and nukeable.  I just can't find 
it.

What have you found?  I'm desperate enough about a couple of things to be 
quite happy to have to become root if it will just solve it.
