Regarding OP's gfxchip, I'm pretty sure I did that for him. We're both using rev 06 Haswell, which works in Wheezy for me just fine with 1680x1050 and 1920x1080 displays. He should be able to use the same xorg.conf I shared if he changes its 1680x1050 to 1600x900, unless there's an EDID or cabling problem with his 1600x900 device. This should be simpler than upgrades intended for newer gfxchips than what we have which are unlikely to be relevant to manually configuring multihead for hardware design approaching 3 years of age.
