I don't care for "kate" either.  I am trying to get rid of it !

I originally went into Synaptic and tried to remove it from there, but 
it wanted to remove most of TDE. So I chickened out and tried to 
rename every instance that I could find to stop it opening up when 
ever I selected a text file. I also tried "open with" and "remember 
application".  So I've now been round and deleted every instance that 
I can find, but it simply replaces the renamed or deleted files.
