Interesting question. Both - on FreeBSD and Devuan - "env|grep TDEROOTHOME" gives 
TDEROOTHOME=/root/.trinity
I am under the impression, that this directory is used for settings done in systemadministration mode of kcontrol - as far as these settings do not go to /etc/
