Thanks for the information and no, it doesn't seem to apply here. It's not a lack of horsepower, it's something else. I have some (kinda clumsy, but they'll do) workarounds; was just hoping to fix it because otherwise GIMP 2.10.10 is spectacularly good. Adding to the puzzle is that if I boot into a Gnome session, the problem doesn't exist, so it's clearly some dispute between TDE and things Gnomish.
