After getting nowhere reading the source and editing random config
files I blew away my config by "mv ~/.trinity/share/config{,.SAFE}".

In Buster 14.0.5 this gives me a stable two display desktop.

In Buster 14.0.7 this gives me a flashing unusable desktop.

If you temporarily rename your Stretch 14.0.7 config and
reboot does your desktop break?  If not, could you please
share you xorg.conf?
