When you say almost useless what do you mean? 

I have noticed you can run TDE apps under Plasma and Mate but you either need to modify the paths or use absolute paths when launching the app, so instead of just typing konqueor you would have to add a shortcut to /opt/trinity/bin/konquorer. This is probably true of other desktops as well but I haven't tried them.
