I've had no problems using imap and pop3 gmail with kmail. 
I just  figured out their nonesense.

Here are my settings, hopefully it will help

Incoming:
Host = pop.gmai.com
Port = 995
Encryption = SSL
Auth Meth = clear text

Outgoing:
Host = smtp.gmail.com
Port = 465
Fill in Server requires authentication
Encryption = SSL
Auth Meth = plain
