I just tried a USB drive on my test Lenny system that has the kde-trinity
metapackage installed.  It worked, so I will give you a complete list of
all hal packages that I have installed:

hal
hal-info
hal-trinity
libhal-dev
libhal-storage-dev
libhal-storage1
libhal1

Try installing those packages and rebooting.  If that does not rectify the
problem please let me know and I will see what else I can dig up.
