Sorry I can't help with the Debian CD process as I am unfamiliar with it. 
For Ubuntu I use Reconstructor, which is an older (and no longer
available) Python script that automates much of the tedium.  There is a
new Web-based Reconstructor version that is currently available, but it
appears the owner can charge you for the privilege.
