These applications won't launch from the menu either, thus redering the 
computer almost totally useless.

This seems to apply to everything.  But I can't run my main desktop launching 
all applications as root via Klauncher. 

I thought taht I just edited sources.list, updated and installed.  But itis 
probably PEBKAC again.

You lot are soon going to tell me of the joys of KDE4, just to get rid of me.
