so it looks like the driver would run on a silicon graphics chip.

I just realized the better detector is

lshw -C network

do you know how to run this as root? it may not be necessary. let's 
try it and see what it yields.

I'm getting the impression your chip isn't well supported but perhaps 
someone else can chip in with knowledge of it.
