So much has happened since I wrote my OP that I'm not sure if I did anything 
else to fix this besides:

I was trying to use a mono pin jack cable instead of stereo. With a stereo 
cable it's working just fine, in spite of dmesg showing "No response from 
codec" and "Codec #1 probe error; disabling it". On a different PC I took the 
mono cable off of, it was working, but only on one speaker. Why on this one 
it wouldn't work at all I have no idea.
