Thanks, Slávek!  You can be relied on for helpful suggestions!
 I am litterally on my way out . :-(  But I shall see to this as soon as I get 
back.  I already have a kernel from Backports, 3.2.0, so I'll get a 
backported xorg as soon as I can get to the keyboard again, and I'll send the 
log.
