Very amusing (not).  I found the correct APT incantation for chrome and 
installed it (google-chrome-stable (23.0.1271.97-r171054)).  Same problem 
with the upload dialog!  I can select the file, but it never gets inserted 
in the correct place on the web page.  Same as in Firefox.
