it's very good but I seem to be encountering some problems. first I'll 
respond quickly to your comments but then post separately on an issue

I can't find a way to get borders but I'll try again later. the color 
theme trick doesn't seem to work but I may simply be missing 
something.

alright but I'd rather remove the stuff. I can remove the tabs on the

too late now! I did an 'apt-get upgrade'. may be connected to my 
problems.
