I don't use search since I know the names of the applications I use most often so I have a couple of terminals open and just type in the names, e.g. 'gimp&' and voila! (frankly, I seldom even look at the 'desktop'; I'd have to look to see what icons are present there. for my 'use case', it is irrelevant except as necessary prop for the programs I am engaged in.) 'apropos graphics' helps if I'm having trouble recalling the name but I also keep the (classic) menu pruned so stuff I'm not likely to even fool around with gets removed. sorry, I don't have Francois's original post thus I'm replying to this end of the long tail. just mentioning other ways and preferences for doing things. I would also endorse keeping/adding 'kickoff' as an option for those who find it useful. F. -- Felmon Davis It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor.
