Thanks for all the replies. Not sure how to fix it but it seems that my 
issues are caused by the fact that my /home directory is the same and 
has been through several Debian upgrades.  Upgrading TDE from the 
start, did a new install of Wheezy & TDE recently, same /home.

I think my .trinity folder has problems. A new use's kmail works as 
expected, also my test vm works as expected.. I don't want to just 
start fresh, new .trinity,  as there is a lot of email filters, notes, 
calendars that I need. Not sure how to migrate the good and leave the 
problems behind.
