They don't need adding.  Just click on the icon you have and the various 
options will be available - logout, shutdown, restart etc.

Apropos of your Thunderbird problem: it is obviously not a TDE problem as 
such, since it also occurs in i3.  Have you thought of purging Thunderbird 
and installing from upstream?  (If you don't know what I mean, just ask.)  
But be careful to back up your email!!
