I am using Wheezy amd64 . Right know, I am running 3.5.12, 3.5.13, & the 
next release R14 , without issues.

Failure of TDE to start indicates an issue, somewhere . Probaly best to 
troubleshoot that than run LXDE, or other DE, and expect things to. 
work. 

I have tried, briefly..not much extra effort, to run TDE apps under 
XFCE. There are PATH changes (apps & libs) that  have to be manually 
added.
